| What it is
Powerchute version 6.0, typically installed on Windows servers to work with APC Uninterruptible Power Supplies, will fail in a rather spectacular manner after 8/16/2005. The software will fail to allow the server to shut down, will make boot up take up to an hour, and can lock you out of your control panel. Booting into safe mode may be the only way to remove the software from your system. It's critical that Powerchute 6 be uninstalled from any Windows Servers and be replaced by version 7 or better for continued operation and protection of your UPS power supply and server. The problem is caused by an expirations of the Java Runtime Edition that the powerchute software is written in. The expiration causes the software not to run properly. I am not sure if the vulnerability affects Novell or Linux versions of Powerchute, but it's probably safest to upgrade those as well. If your machine won't boot - follow the instructions in the knowledgebase link.
What to do
The update of the software will fix the problem. Users of Powerchute Business Edition 6 should update to 7.0.4 per the link below. Users of Windows NT versions should upgrade to 7.0.2 per the link below. If you have PowerChute Business Edition Deluxe 6.x you should call technical support at Powerchute to receive a new copy. This update only applies to the server edition of powerchute, and will generally not affect home users, or users that only use the Windows XP, 2000 or NT built in UPS signalling (simple signalling).
