What Is It? The Mozilla Foundation has released version 1.5.0.3 of its Firefox Web browser, to correct a publicly reported flaw that causes a the browser to crash and could, theoretically, allow remote code execution. Fortunately, it appears that the flaw can manifest only when Design Mode is turned on. This is not a normal operating mode. However, we are a tad concerned by the workaround, which is to disable JavaScript. Needless to say, I am updating my copy of Firefox. According to the Mozilla security announcement at http://www.mozilla.org/security/announce/2006/mfsa2006-30.html, this problem affects only the Mozilla Web browser. What Should You Do? If your copy of Firefox is configured to automatically check for and apply updates, there is nothing to do. Otherwise, follow the instructions below to obtain the update.
  • Open your current version of Firefox. In the unlikely event that you use another Web browser, the download works the same way, up to at least step 4.
  • Navigate to http://www.mozilla.com/.
  • Click the Download button. The browser will automatically detect your operating system and locale (language) and select the correct package.
  • After maybe 15 seconds, your download should start. Depending on your settings, you may be asked to choose a location for saving the file. Firefox will, however, force a download.
  • When the download completes, the Download Manager window lists the new file, and has options to Open or Remove the file. Click Open to install version 1.5.0.3 of Firefox.
  • When the setup program starts, it offers options to Restart Firefox Now and Later. Click Restart Firefox Now to proceed with the update. All open Firefox windows will close, and the installation will commence.
  • When the installation completes, Firefox restarts, and points itself to http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/updated, thereby confirming that the update succeeded.
Fortunately, you can arrange for Mozilla products to maintain themselves. For Firefox, here is how.
  • On the Tools menu, choose the last item, Options.
  • On the ribbon of icons across the top of the Options dialog, choose Advanced.
  • Verify that, at minimum, the top box under "Automatically check for updates to" is checked.
  • In the "When updates to Firefox are found" area, you may choose "Ask me what I want to do" or "Automatically download and install the update." By default, the latter is checked, but you should periodically verify this setting.
Unfortunately, without joining a newsgroup or forum, there doesn't appear to be an official method of being notified of critical updates that is comparable to the Microsoft Product Security Notification service, which notifies you of new updates by email. If you use Firefox now or are considering it, please keep these instructions, as they may not be included in every future notice that requires a Firefox update.
