| What Is It?
Microsoft released three Security Bulletins today, one of which affects all Windows users and all three of which affect users whose computers are part of a LAN such as you might have at your office. The most important bulletin, and the only one which we address in this notice, deals with a buffer overrun in the HTML converter. Since the HTML converter is an integral part of Internet Explorer, Outlook, Outlook Express, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc., you use it every day, whether you know it or not.
As with all buffer overruns, the risk in this one is that an attacker could run code of his choice on your computer. This could could do anything that you can do, including corrupt or delete files or the Windows Registry.
What Should I Do?
Visit the Windows Update Web site at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select all critical updates. If you are applying updates selectively, select the update marked "823559: Security Update" followed by your version of Windows in parentheses.
We recommend that you apply all the critical updates, with the possible exception of 811493: Security Update, with which there have been many documented problems, of which I have first hand knowledge. I intend to await the next Service Pack for that one.
References
The official Microsoft Security Bulletin is titled "Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-023: Buffer Overrun In HTML Converter Could Allow Code Execution (823559)" and is located at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-023.asp.
This concludes this VirusWarn message.
