What it is We've had several reports that after loading the latest set of security updates, or running Windows update and rebooting that machines are locking up with an error that indicates that SVCHOST.EXE has failed. It prompts you to send a message to Microsoft about the error. If you click on the OK button on this error message it will then lock up your machine. These problems are definitely caused by a corrupted windows update patch download. The most common cause for this is that the user has a flaky internet connection, or their internet connection is terminated in the middle of a download (maybe their machine crashed, or was shut down prematurely). In any case there's a fairly straightforward way to fix the problem and bring your machine back to health. What you should do Since this is a fairly complex problem we've added a page to the new viruswarning.com site about how to fix the problem. You can find the information at this link: http://www.viruswarn.com/Troubleshooting/WindowsUpdateService/tabid/71/Default.aspx The key is NOT to panic, and not to click the "ok" button on the warning message that comes up - then go to this website, print out the contents and follow the instructions. Note that after windows update is "repaired" you may need to reinstall the update components. If your system prompts you to install Windows Update (rather than just offering you the Express and Custom buttons) you should do so to be sure you're getting all that windows update goodness. While you're there, explore the new viruswarn.com site. Soon we'll have new updated forums for your enjoyment, with all the archived messages from the past viruswarn bulletins on it. (In the meantime the archives are still available at www.leedrake.com/forum).
