What Is It? Microsoft recently released a couple of updates - one to Internet Explorer 6 that rolls up several hot fixes into a single post service pack one fix, and another that fixes an authentication vulnerability in Windows XP logon procedures. Both are recommended updates, and both can be gotten from: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com In addition, there is a new version of MDAC the drivers for databases. If you are a user of Microsoft Access or SQL Server and you're not running windows XP it's advised that you update to the latest MDAC drivers, which are available at: http://www.microsoft.com/data/download.htm You will want BOTH MDAC 2.6 SP 2 REFRESH and you'll want the Jet 4.0 SP3 update if you're using Access. If you're managing multiple machines, or a multi user environment you'll want all of the machines to be updated simultaneously so you're on the same platform. If you're supporting a large multi-user installation I'd advise setting up a test environment first before deploying it to your production machines. Windows XP ships with the 2.6 revision and you do not need to update 2.6 machines. What Should You Do? Update using windows update if you're just using IE 6.0. Update both if you also have Office installed. Additional Information None at this time - see the notes for additional information about the security patches that the windows update patches and the database vulnerabilities in earlier versions of MDAC. This concludes this VirusWarning notice, dated Thursday 11/21/2002. Lee Drake Aztek Computer Solutions, Inc. 39 N. Goodman St. Rochester, NY 14607

After updating to MDAC 2.6, and Jet 4.0 sp3, you should then reboot and run Windowsupdate to get the latest patch that corrects the problem: windowsupdate.microsoft.com To be clear: MDAC 2.7 which is included in XP is not available for other platforms, but is protected against this problem. MDAC 2.6 requires you to visit Windowsupdate after install in order to be completely protected. Sorry for the confusion. Lee Drake Aztek Computer Solutions, Inc. 39 N.
