What is it A new critical update to Internet Explorer 6.0. This update specifically addresses the vulnerabilities that allowed the FDIC and US Bank spoofs and other EBay and paypal spoofs to occur by hiding the URL that you're actually visiting in the URL Bar. It will prevent those sorts of spoofs from happening by disabling the feature that allowed the real URL to be hidden. It also disables the ability to log into a protected website using the format http://username@password:www.websitename.com . This will not affect most users, however some web designers may need to change the way their websites log into private areas. There are other alternatives (such as letting IE prompt you for the username and password) to using this technique. It also prevents two other vulnerabilities that might allow a website owner to trick you into running code on your machine that they had written. Applying this update is critical to preventing spoofing, and for prevention of future viruses and worms. We STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you run this critical update (and any other pending ones) sooner rather than later. The reason is that the Mydoom.B virus is due to kick in and attack Microsoft's site with a denial of service attack soon. When it does it may become difficult to retrieve the update. We recommend visiting windowsupdate.microsoft.com sooner rather than later and updating your software - please don't put this one off. What to do Go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com, scan for updates, and accept all offered critical updates, including the new Microsoft update.
