What it is Microsoft has released an important new update to MS Office XP, and has detailed a vulnerability in Outlook that could be used to spread an email virus. At the rate that viruses spread these days, it's very important to update your software as soon as possible. This vulnerability specifically affects only Outlook XP (AKA Outlook 2002). It does NOT affect Outlook 2000 nor does it affect Outlook 2003. It is unknown as to whether it affects earlier versions than 2000 since Microsoft no longer supports these office platforms. If you are not using Outlook 2002 you are not affected by this vulnerability and no further action need be taken. The vulnerability could allow a virus to create a clickable link that would install and run software on your computer from inside an email message. The link might appear initially to just be a mailto: link. There are workarounds for the problem, but we recommend simply downloading and installing the update to remove the problem. What you should do Check to be sure you are running Office XP. Run MS Outlook and choose the HELP/ABOUT menu option. An XP version will say Microsoft Office Outlook XP or Microsoft Office Outlook 2002 in the version portion of the Help/About Dialog. We recommend updating the entire Office XP suite using Service Pack 3. You can obtain SP3 by going to Microsoft's office update site and running their office update procedure, or from the following link if you wish to download the package once. YOU WILL NEED your original Office XP installation disks to install the update - be sure they are available. Go to this site and click "Check for updates". If the site asks you to download an activeX control, allow it to: http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/ Another alternative is to only patch Outlook XP. You can download the patch for Outlook from the following link. Again, you will need the original disks to install the patch. Modem users, or users that only use Outlook and not the other office components may wish to opt for this type of install. Note that it will only fix the specific problem mentioned here. We strongly recommend running the entire SP3 patch instead of this method. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=52F1A951-24DB-44A5-9475-EA5D302BCA6A&displaylang=en We are very concerned about this vulnerability - any email vulnerability gets exploited quickly. There are currently no KNOWN instances of viruses in the wild exploiting this problem. Please be sure to update ASAP.
