| What is it?
Brett Rabideau of Periwinkle Communications let me know about another program to look for and help prevent spyware and pop-up software - similar to Ad-Aware. This program has the the cutesie name "SpyBot Search and Destroy" however it's anything but cutesie. It does a great job of both removing spyware and cookies, as well as helping to prevent getting them back.
This program offers a number of tools that Ad-Aware does not, and is also freeware/shareware (the author asks for a donation - which we feel is warranted considering the excellent program he's offering). In addition to scanning for executables (it looks for nearly twice as many variants as Ad-Aware) and cookies, it also does a very thorough job of searching for registry entries, allows you to set up a "blocked site" list which will prevent typical pop-up and ad software from even finding their "source sites". I use a similar "host list" that I created from internet and other sources to help cut down on ads on my machine.
It will also install (optionally) an immunizer which will warn you before ad-software attempts to install over the internet.
I've tested this software on a number of systems including XP, 2000 and Win 98/ME and it works well. The only problem I've discovered is that the blocked site list will block users from using the web login to AOL. Fortunately, this is an optional component so as long as you don't install it (or uninstall that feature) you won't be bothered. I've also found that from time to time it will pause for a long time when processing - it has not hung up and if you let it continue it will eventually go back to processing it's scan quickly. The user interface is VERY thorough, but there's an "Easy mode" for those that only want to use the major features of the software.
I'd recommend using this software in addition to the fine software provide by Ad-Aware because the two both detect things the others do not.
What should you do?
Download and install Spy-Bot Search and Destroy from the following website:
http://www.safer-networking.org/
Be sure to get the original - there are some stolen versions out there that actually have spy software in them. Download only from other sites linked into this site.
After installing the software, be sure to use the built in function to download the latest "signatures" for the Spybot Software. There is no "automatic live update" with Spybot. You must download the updates manually the first time you run it. The internet install package does NOT have the latest signatures in it.
This software is NOT a replacement for a virus program. You must still keep good, up to date virus signatures, and be sure your virus software is updating.
We also recommend that you run a program such as Zone-Alarm to prevent programs from running on your machine and accessing the internet without your knowledge
Acquire a hardware firewall to isolate your local network from the internet. Examples of easy to use hardware firewalls include the Linksys BEFSR41 and the DLink brand of firewalls.
