Summary Microsoft has released an update to Internet explorer that closes several security holes in the browser, and rolls up a number of fixes that were formerly only available as single hot fixes. These fixes also affect browser based emailers such as Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express. We highly recommend applying this update to all your machines. The patch can be obtained from: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ You can read about the update details here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/ms02-005.asp What does this update correct: A buffer overrun condition in the HTML interpreter that allows the potential of running code of the programmers choice on your machine A leak in a security check in script based code that allows a malicious user to read files on your computer A flaw that allows a website to obscure the file extension of a downloaded file, fooling you into downloading something you did not intend, or to execute a downloaded program. A flaw that allows a script to run a different program than the intended one to open a file. A flaw that allows a web page to run a script - even if you have scripting disables, or the file is in a restricted zone. A flaw that allows a malicious script to open two explorer domains and load information into one from your local file system and send that information out using the other window. Together these are all fairly serious security breaches - any one of which could be exploited by a malicious web page or email to compromise your system's security. It's highly recommended that you apply this update as soon as possible. Those with critical update warning on should already have gotten a warning. The patch applies to Internet Explorer 5.5 sp2 and better or version 6.0. Please check windows update as soon as possible and get your system updated. Lee Drake, Moderator
