What it is On Patch Tuesday in October (10/10) Microsoft released a record 26 new patches to products ranging from operating system specific patches to Microsoft Office application patches. There's a patch in the mix for just about everyone. Most of you received all the critical patches as part of windows update. However - with recent changes in update - some of you may not getting all the patches you need. We'd like to remind you that if you go (manually) to http://update.microsoft.com if the site offers you the opportunity to install Microsoft Update you are probably only patching your critical operating system files and NOT your office files. If you are offered the opportunity to upgrade to Microsoft Update we recommend you click the button and do the update. Then reboot and re-run windows update to be sure you're getting all that patch goodness. You'll be surprised at how many additional patches you get when you do this update if you haven't already. We have had a few people who's Windows Update process has gotten screwed up. See our next message in the series for how to fix this problem. I'm just going to hit on a couple of highlighted areas where patches could be important here - not detail every single Microsoft patch for the month. If you want the full details we suggest you visit (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-oct.mspx). For the highlight see below: Microsoft Powerpoint and Excel spreadsheet vulnerabilities - most people trust office documents as not containing viruses. Unfortunately as we've seen from past word document issues - this isn't necessarily true. There are newly discovered vulnerabilities that could allow viruses to spread through normally trusted documents such as powerpoint or excel. If you have these applications we strongly suggest you get these patches, and in general be sure you trust the source and expect the attachment if you get one. Powerpoint especially is used on the internet to send around slideshows of pictures etc. If you have Office XP, 2000 or 97 you may need your original installation disks when you install these patches. Be sure to have them handy. Note that these vulnerabilities also are in the Mac version of these products. Windows Shell vulnerabilities - this affects all versions of windows after 2000. It may affect older versions - however these versions are no unsupported by Microsoft. We highly recommend upgrading if you have Windows9X or WindowsME or WindowsNT. Server vulnerabilities - Windows 2003 Server is vulnerable to the shell vulnerabilities and a server service vulnerability that could allow a remote machine to be compromised or cause a denial of service. Anyone with a server should apply these updates immediately. What you should do Be sure you're running Windows Update by going to http://update.microsoft.com. You're running the correct version if your screen displays "Welcome to Microsoft Update" and offers you only the two buttons of Express or Custom. If you have a message asking if you wish to install Windows Update - say yes, and follow the script. You may need to install several activex controls along the way. Be sure you have downloaded all of the critical updates from the October release - especially the ones for Office. It might be a good time to do a "custom" update and install the optional patches as well. We frequently leave those out when we're used to having the installs automatically apply. If for some reason you do NOT want to install the newest version of windows update you'll need to got to http://officeupdate.microsoft.com to install the office updates.
