In a former message we recommended (based on recommendations from w00w00) that an AIM filter might be installed to try to block the types of packets that could cause the security breach in AIM. As it turns out - the filter itself has spyware that reports information back to a central site, and could potentially be used as a backdoor to get into your system. The source that we got the information from is usually a very trusted source - but in this case they trusted a bit too much and posted the information before the source code for the program was verified. They verified that it blocked the attack but didn't go on to verify anything else about the code. Since none of us on the virus warning admin list are AIM users we didn't download or test the software ourselves. You will note that because of this I said in the original message that "The best recommendation is to turn off AIM until the problem is resolved". If you've installed the AIM filter, it's highly recommended that you uninstall it - especially now that the immediate danger is over. As always scan your computer for viruses - and be aware that any computer program from an unknown source could be a source of trouble. If you have installed the filter and are still worried about it, please contact me at Aztek and I'll see what I can do to get it purged off your systems for you. I apologize for the mess - in our eagerness to inform we got a bit sloppy on the checking up side of things. I'll try to be sure that any such recommendations for software installations in the future are verified and checked before posting. Lee Drake, Moderator
