Microsoft recently released two very important critical updates. One applies to all systems running Internet Explorer (read "all systems running windows" here) and the other applies to Windows ME and XP systems in particular. If you run windows update the appropriate patches will be downloaded onto your system. Both these vulnerabilities are critical - one allows an email (through Outlook or Outlook express) to bypass security and run code on your machine, and the other allows a remote user to hack or crash your machine. If you're using Zone Alarm the second vulnerability isn't as big a deal, and if you have virus scanning and email scanning enabled and up to date the first is probably ameliorated some. As you know we recommend that you always have a "belt and suspenders" approach to security - keep patched up to date AND have good virus and firewall protection. You can update your machine by choosing Start/Windows update or by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com . This is one of the rare times that we recommend that you DO accept an activex control on your machine, as the windows update program will download a scanning tool to your PC that checks for out of date components. This scanning tool sends no data back to Microsoft. You should update your Internet explorer to either 5.5 SP2 or Version 6, and then apply any and all critical updates until the "no critical updates is shown". Note that depending on how long it has been since you did this, it may require multiple passes with windows update to achieve all patches. I'd also recommend applying any recommended updates that look to be security related. These will differ from machine to machine. If you are on a modem please allocate a nice long comfortable evening or vacation afternoon to the process, there are several megabytes of data to be downloaded. This concludes this viruswarn update... Lee Drake, Moderator
