| There are two viruses, one sort of old, but rapidly gaining a toehold, and
one fairly new that we feel you should watch out for. These viruses both
spread by email, one with a "PORTABLE EXECUTABLE" or PE extension (the
extension may well be hidden by your operating system) and the other by an
EXE attachment. Both are dangerous. As always we recommend that you never
open attachments unless you are expecting them, and never open an executable
sent via email. Both of these viruses may be prevented by keeping your
email software up to date with the latest patches, and having adequate virus
protection, especially of incoming email messages.
The two viruses are detailed as follows:
The MTX.W32 virus. This virus is a virulent EXE infector, that will
literally destroy a system by corrupting it's exe files to the point that
cleaning them just renders your system useless. While active it hooks the
outgoing email function and injects emails into the outgoing email stream
BEHIND your email software (that is you'll never see any evidence this is
happening inside your email software). It adds attachments with the virus,
and has over 20 different headers to make it harder to catch with a simple
header filter.
Details can be found at:

and

The other virus is a brand new one, currently affecting Europe, but likely
to spread over here as well. It's a more simple EXE type infector, but it
is nonetheless a dangerous virus. It's name is Sonic.Worm, and the danger
with this virus is that it checks a website and downloads updates to itself,
making it able to be self-modifying. This one is especially dangerous
because it is a backdoor virus, allowing others to take over your computer
remotely.
Details about this virus can be found at:

In addition Norton Antivirus 2001 has a vulnerability that may provide a
safe haven for viruses in the system restore directory on Windows Millenium
Edition computers. This vulnerability ONLY affects Windows ME systems, not
win nt, 2000, 95 or 98. They are working on a fix. Keep your liveupdate
turned on to ensure the fix is applied.
