Microsoft has released a patch that fixes a security hole in their products. This problem could affect you if you are running any of the following products and have either html email or internet connectivity: Microsoft(r) Office 2000 (Access, Excel and PowerPoint) and in PowerPoint 97, and Access 97. The security problem could allow a malicious person to write an email script, or a web page that gives the person full access to your system, including but not limited to the formatting of your hard drive. As such we strongly recommend that you run the WindowsUpdate option at http://officeupdate.microsoft.com or http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and update your system to fix this vulnerability. For more technical information about the vulnerability check out: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/fq00-049.asp and http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms00-049.asp You can manually install the update in the following way: If you have office 2000, go to this page and click DOWNLOAD NOW, then chose Open from Current location: http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/2000/downloaddetails/Addinsec.htm If you have Office 97 go to this page, click DOWNLOAD NOW then chose Open from current location: http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/downloaddetails/PPt97sec.htm This security patch (unlike the Outlook 2000 security patch) should not affect your system's functionality in any way except to block the malicious user from exploiting it. This patch is highly recommended. Lee Drake, Moderator
