Cerebus Info Security has posted a tool which will allow you to remove the file associations from the windows scripting host on an individual machine. This means that to run the scripting host programs you'd need to actually type them on the command line as (wscript.exe TheNameOfTheScriptingProgram.VBS) for instance. I'd recommend that anyone who is NOT a programmer get and run this utility. These vbs files represent nothing for you except a security risk. I have examined the source code for this tool, and compiled it myself and it works as advertised with no hidden gotchas in the background. As always I'd recommend virus scanning it, but it comes up clean for me. For those that ARE programmers you should ask yourselves whether this particular risk is warranted by the convenience of not having to use the full wscript syntax when running scripts. http://www.cerberus-infosec.co.uk/vf.exe The file is 32kb and will take no time at all to download, even on a modem.
