What it is On it's usual schedule Microsoft issued it's normal patches for MS products on Tuesday. The patches included some vulnerability patches including one that allows a malicious website to download content to your system by sending different cursor icon's to your desktop, and a bug in the HTML help tool which affects all versions of MS Software. Interestingly, for the first time, the patches also contain a utility to purge certain viruses off your machine. Think of this tool as Microsoft's "mini-stinger". This is not their full anti-spyware utility which in in Beta test right now. This tool will remove certain worms, trojans and viruses from your machine (the most common ones - sasser, klez, etc.). It is NOT an antivirus program - it simply removes threats that are already there, as opposed to preventing them in the first place. Think of it like McAfee's Stinger - a general purpose removal tool. The good thing is it may well disable those viruses in thousands of machines of people who don't know they're infected. The malicious software removal tool only runs on Windows 2k and better. What to do If you have automatic updates turned on your little "shield" in the lower right should be telling you they're ready to be installed, or have already been installed and you need to reboot. Do so, accepting all available options. If you don't have automatic updates on you'll need to visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and accept all critical updates. Note that several of the updates aren't available for lower versions of windows (Win NT, etc.) through windowsupdate. For non-XP/Windows 2003/Windows 2000 users you may need to download the patch manually through the links below for the individual vulnerabilities. There are also patches available for a number of server systems as well - if you're running servers, be sure to patch them up. Zero day attacks are becoming pretty common and these vulnerabilities are now well known Further references Microsoft Windows Update site: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com Released Patches: MS-05-001 HTML Help vulnerability, full details: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS05-001.mspx MS-05-002 Cursor and icon handling bug: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS05-002.mspx MS-05-003 Indexing service bug: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS05-003.mspx More info on the malicious software removal tool: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=890830 This concludes this viruswarning notice, Cheers, Lee Drake Aztek Computer Solutions, Inc. 274 N.
