What it is Some folks, for various reasons, have switched to Mozilla's Firefox browser. Like any piece of software, this browser has it's share of security flaws. Recently Mozilla released a new version of Firefox designed to thwart would-be attackers attempting to use a buffer-overflow vulnerability in the Firefox browser. Like a recent problem with Microsoft software that involved image file processing, this vulnerability can be exploited simply by sending a picture via email, or viewing a picture on the web with the necessary overflow information. In all Firefox has patched 21 problems in it's code, 7 of which were rated as "severe". This newest flaw is rated "severe". In the same period of time Microsoft has patched 13 vulnerabilies, however 9 of them were rated as "Severe". The new patched version was released Wednesday as version 1.02. Firefox also fixed a couple of other, more minor bugs in a 1.01 patch a couple of weeks ago. There are no known exploits of this code yet, but with the new release there are bound to be exploits available to virus and hackers alike in a matter of days. What should you do Update your Firefox to Version 1.02 as soon as possible.
