Is anyone else running Microsoft Software Update Services servers in their domains? Recently, I was asked/told to set up a SUS infrastructure for my agency to insure that all of the workstations and production servers were kept up-to-date with Microsoft hot fixes and critical patches. I chose to deploy 2 Dell PowerEdge 2550s for the servers (1 for a 4 production server test pool, one for the rest of the production servers) and 2 PowerEdge 2550s for the 5000ish workstations we support (1 for a 50 workstation test pool and the other to supply updates the remainder of our staff and client workstations). We set up a 2 week testing cycle for all patches to coincide with Microsoft's schedule of security hot fixes. Once all new patches and hotfixes have been tested on the test servers and workstations, the production SUS servers are manually updated with the updates and approval lists and the rest of our servers and workstations get their new updates, and reboot, at 8am in the morning. Being somewhat new at taking responsibility for this type of infrastructure, I'm curious if any other readers have used this service, and if so, how you designed it to function in an enterprise.
